Résumé

La paternité du concept de géopolitique est en général attribuée au Suédois Rudolf Kjellén qui l’utilisait sa langue dès 1899. Il est frappant de constater que le Hongrois Emil Reich commença à l’utiliser en anglais quasiment simultanément, en s’inspirant lui aussi du géographe allemand Friedrich Ratzel. Il ne se contentait d’ailleurs pas d’utiliser le terme mais avait véritablement développé une conception profondément originale de la géopolitique. L’originalité de sa démarche était qu’il ne se contentait pas de prendre en compte l’influence des facteurs géographiques en histoire, mais bien explicitement des facteurs géopolitiques à proprement parler. Reich écrivait avant tout en historien des civilisations, mais les implications pour comprendre les relations internationales de son temps étaient claires. Malgré son originalité, la pensée géopolitique d’Emil Reich fut rapidement oubliée et n’eut aucune postérité. 

Abstract

The concept of geopolitics is generally attributed to the Swede Rudolf Kjellén, who used it in his language as early as 1899. It is striking to note that the Hungarian Emil Reich began to use it in English almost simultaneously, also drawing inspiration from the German geographer Friedrich Ratzel. He was not content with using the term, however, but had actually developed a profoundly original conception of geopolitics. The originality of his approach was that he was not content to consider the influence of geographical factors in history, but explicitly geopolitical factors in their own right. Reich wrote primarily as a historian of civilizations, but the implications for understanding the international relations of his time were clear. Despite its originality, Emil Reich’s geopolitical thought was quickly forgotten and had no posterity.
